Mission Shopping

why is that typo so hilarious? I love it so much. If anyone's caught the missionary plague, I have...

I hate shopping. Tragically, prepping for Mormon missions requires a lot of it. Because I'm self-absorbed, here's a rundown of the types of shopping you might hate to do if you're like me.

skirts
The look we're going for here is anything that screams nineties. I'm not kidding. Tea-length nineties floral mom skirts. If you want to be hip and fresh like me go and pick yourself up a couple from your local thrift store for like $4 each. They're pretty sweet.

tops
Ughhhhhh this part is the worst. Just go somewhere and pick up a bunch of  nondescript, identical-but-different-colored knit tops for cheap. Then raid your family members' closets for button-up collared shirts. You might want those too.

sweaters
Cardigans are apparently the height of fashion for the aspiring missionary. At least they're vaguely functional. But that doesn't cut it, you're not going to a normal mission. You're going to RUSSIA. Scrounge thick outgrown sweaters from your mother and sister. Or better yet, buy your dang outerwear in the motherland.

accessories
Wait, do people actually like wearing jewelry? Forget that.

It occurs to me that "accessories" here could also mean cold-weather gear. Yeah whatever, I'd rather freeze than accessorize. You can accessorize me when I'm dead.

shoes
Shoes for lady missionaries are notoriously either hideous or foot-damaging. In fact, some are both! Just ask my sister. Anyway, thanks to that sister's persisting foot problems, I persuaded my parents to help me buy shoes. #winning

Fun fact- you can minimize the need for future foot surgery and maximize your punk-rockness by getting shoes that either look like they're for men or look like they're for middle-aged ladies. Loafers actually work super well. As do oxfords. Good luck finding any if it's not winter.

bras
Actually, bra shopping is always bad and will always be bad, regardless of mission. Unless you want to fly to the UK or France and buy bras for $90 a pop you should just resign yourself to poor sizing and back pain.

Hah. Good luck!
